Eight Arklow Community Games athletes will head for Shillelagh this Saturday 16th of June to represent their area at the county track and field finals.

Congratulations and well done to our gymnasts and swimmers on their excellent performances at the 2018 National Community Games May Festival Gymnastics and Swimming finals which took place at the University of Limerick recently, no medals but these fifteen athletes did their area and county proud.

Arklow Community Games was awarded the Lily Kavanagh Perpetual Shield for best area in county gymnastics and the Tom Nolan Perpetual Shield for best area in county swimming.

County Wicklow Community Games held their Gymnastics County Finals at the Arklow Gymnastics Centre on Sunday the 25th of March starting at 11a.m. The gymnasts attending were representing Ashford/Glenealy, Baltinglass, Roundwood and Arklow.

The audience enjoyed some great performances on the floor and the vault. The scoring was very tight in some of the age groups and all the gymnasts gave their best.

The under 9 Girls section was won by Caithlin Holt(Arklow), followed by Lily-Jo Rowlands (Arklow) in 2nd place with Sophie Hurley (Arklow) and Emily Christopher (Arklow) in joint 3rd place.
The Under 9 boys was won by Lincoln Breen (Arklow) with a great routine.

The under 11 Girls have a floor routine and a vault to perform and it is the combined score that ranks the gymnasts. This section was very tight with the first 2 gymnasts tied on the same combined, floor and vault score. The winner was Orlaith Holt (Arklow), based on the floor score. In second place was Grace O’Connor (Arklow), followed by Layla Cahill (Arklow) and Faye Kenny (Arklow).

Under 11 Boys was won by Darragh Furlong(Arklow). Reuben Factor(Arklow) was a close 2nd place.

Under 13 Girls also perform a floor routine and a vault and only 0.3 separated the first 4 gymnasts. The winner was Emily Hayes (Arklow). The second place went to Zara Fennell (Arklow). And 0.1 back was Clodagh Shelton (Arklow) and in 4th place we had Emily Quinn (Baltinglass).

The under 13 boys was won by Jack Burke (Arklow).

Under 15 Girls winner was Jordan O’Brien (Arklow). Second place went to Ava Godkin (Arklow), with Leah Farrell (Roundwood) in 3rd place.

Special thanks to Jessica Davies from Dublin for the great job judging and everyone who helped on the day. Thanks to the County PRO, Phyliss Farrell who attended.

The Gold medal winners will represent County Wicklow at the National Finals at the Aldi Community Games May Festival 2018 on May 25th to May 27th in the University of Limerick.

Art

158 children whose ages ranged from six to sixteen years entered exhibits through their schools for our 2017 area art competitions,38 medals, ten gold, ten silver and eighteen bronze were presented to the winning artists through their schools.

Gymnastics

February 2017 Orlaith Holt was crowned Arklow young gymnast of the year for 2016 and Jack Burke the most improved young gymnast.

95 gymnasts participated at our Festival of Gymnastics competitions, a packed Arklow Gymnastics Centre was treated to three hours of outstanding floor routines, area and county chairman Michael Kenny presented the festival medals and trophies.

28 young gymnasts qualified from the above competitions to represent Arklow Community Games at the county finals which took place at the Arklow Gymnastics Centre in March 2017. Arklow Gymnasts displayed tremendous artistic skills on floor and vault winning 21 medals, six gold, six silver, nine bronze and Arklow retained the Lily Kavanagh perpetual shield for the fifteenth season, Wicklow county board officers presented the county medals and shield.

The gold medalists went forward to represent their area and county at the National Community Games Golden Jubilee Finals which took place at the National Gymnastics Centre Abbotstown on Saturday the 6th of May 2017. No medals were won but the magnificent six did their area and county proud.

Swimming

12 children represented Arklow Community Games at the County Finals which took place at the Coral Leisure Swimming Pool Arklow in March 2017. Arklow swimmers excelled in their individual and relay performances winning 14 medals, six gold, three silver and five bronze.

The gold medalists went forward to represent their area and county at the National Community Games Golden Jubilee Finals which took place at the National Aquatic Centre Abbotstown on Saturday the 6th of May 2017.

In the girls under 14 freestyle final Lucy bracken finished in the silver medal position, the girls under 13 relay squad qualified for the final finishing just out of the medals.

Talent

5 children represented Arklow Community Games at the county finals which took place in Glenealy in May 2017. Excellence in their singing and recitations resulted in Arklow winning 4 medals, three gold and one silver.

The gold medalists went forward to represent their area and county at the National Community Games Golden Jubilee Finals which took place at the National Conference Centre Abbotstown on Sunday the 20th of August 2017.

In the girls under 12 solo singing final the beautiful voice of Roisin Vigors came out on top winning the gold medal for Arklow and County Wicklow. Roisin then joined up with her brother Fionn for the group singing final, they gave their best finishing just out of the medals,

This brings the curtain down on another most successful season 270 children whose ages ranged from six to sixteen years participated in six different types of sporting and cultural activities at area, county, provincial and national level.

Art, Gymnastics, Group Singing, Swimming, Solo Singing, Solo Recitations.
